Mark Alexander

Mark David Alexander, 90, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2009.

He was the last surviving son of Sale Creek Church of God pioneer minister, Rev. Samuel Logan Alexander. Mr. Alexander was a veteran of WWII and a retiree of Combustion Engineering. He was well known as owner/breeder and promoter of championship quality equines in the Tennessee Walking Horse and Spotted Saddle Horse Associations. His reputation as a bass singer of Southern Gospel music was well known in the tri-state area; he was a member of the "Travis Quartet" of Dayton, Tenn. He was proud to be a past president of the Sale Creek Lions Club, and former member of the Chattanooga Beekeepers Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Roselyn (Gann) Alexander; parents, Samuel Logan Pinckney (Anna Mae Carroll) Alexander; sisters, Clarice Fuller, Jessie Underwood; brothers, Hershel, Cornelius, and Harold Alexander; and grandson, Brandon Tackett.

He is survived by two sons, Rex (Carol) Alexander, of Soddy-Daisy, and Edward (Diane) Alexander, of Gilbert, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 28, in the funeral home chapel with Bishops Opal Scott and Kenneth Bolton officiating.

Interment will follow in Welsh Cemetery in Sale Creek.

Lena Baker

Lena Pearl Bibbs Baker, 74, passed away Monday, June 22, 2009.

She was a devoted foster parent, caregiver, nanny, and a faithful member of New Bethel FBH Church.

She leaves to cherish her memory son, Aaron Baker, of Chattanooga; daughters, Bonita Daniels, Cheryl (Ralph Harden) Baker; stepson, Edward (Bettie) White; grandsons, Carlton (Tracy) Baker, Jonathon Baker and Charles Harden; granddaughter, Da'Vidia (John) Hudson; great-grandson, Carlon Baker Jr.; great-granddaughter, Courtney Michelle Baker; brothers, William (Lynn) Payton, Waynon (Daisy) Oliver and Ronald Oliver; uncle, Larkin Bibbs, a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2009, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home with Pastor Taylor officiating.

The family will assemble at 262 West 37th Street.

Interment at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Phyllis Bise

Phyllis J. Bise, 65, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, June 26, 2009, at her residence.

A celebration of life service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Heritage Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Flin officiating.

Sadie Mae Brewster

Sadie Mae Brewster, 95, of Chattanooga, died Friday, June 26, 2009, at her home.

She was born on August 26, 1913, in Starkville, Miss., the second child of Sellars and Nannie Kennard. She was the widow of the Rev. Albert L. Brewster.

Sadie Mae was a member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church of Chattanooga.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Jerry Brewster, of Memphis, and his wife, Fern, and Ken Brewster of Chattanooga. Survivors also include five granddaughters; eleven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lorine Turner, of Flora, Miss.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Luke United Methodist Church on Monday, June 29, 2009, in Marshall Hall at 7:30 p.m.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Luke United Methodist Church.

Joe Bryant

Joseph "Joe" Bryant, loving husband, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday evening, June 24, 2009.

He was born March 17, 1926 in Whitwell, Tenn., the son of the late David M. Bryant and Pearl E. Lewis Bryant.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Gloria E. Bryant of Valley Head, Ala. He served in World War II in the Army division from June 1944 until June 1946. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon and two bronze stars, good conduct medal, victory medal of World War II and Army of occupation Medal-Germany. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University in Crossville, Tenn. He was a college professor, middle school teacher, salesman at Sears and Roebuck and retired after 28 years of service. He was a member of Spring Creek Road Baptist Church of East Ridge where he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School for over 50 years.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Houston Jeffrey "Jeff" and Jennifer L. Bryant, of Ooltewah; grandchildren, Jenny K. Bryant, David Lewis Bryant, Charles Ford and Houston Joseph Bryant; also great-grandson, Hunter Bryant. He has one surviving sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Donald Hoback, of Jasper, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. David Clay and the Rev. James Julian officiating.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 5 p.m. today, June 28, at the funeral home.

Clyde Edwin Clemons, 79, of Chattanooga, died Friday, June 26, 2009.

Edward Coley

Edward Coley, 64, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009, in a local hospital.

He worked for the City of Chattanooga in the brush division.

He is survived by his son, James Mitchel (Nicole) Coley; one grandchild, Briana Alexis Coley; previous wife, Carol Coley; mother-in-law, Dorothy Clowes; sister-in-law, Cynthia Clowes.

Graveside service will be at noon Monday at Ruth Cofer Cemetery with the Rev. Keith Jones officiating.

Ruby Cope

Ruby Sumner Cope, 82, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009, at her home after a brief illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred T. Cope Jr.; and daughter, Jane Cope Abercrombie.

She was born Aug. 5, 1926, to the late Hugh and Janie Davis Sumner in Scottsboro, Ala. Mrs. Cope moved to Chattanooga after graduating from high school. After moving to Chattanooga, she met and married her husband, Fred. They were married 52 years before his passing in 1998. She was a longtime member of Brainerd Baptist Church where she volunteered in the nursery and library for many years. She was a loving homemaker, wife, and mother to her family. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

She was a member of the Missionary Ridge Chapter UDC, Chief John Ross Chapter NSDAR, and American Ex-Prisoners of War Chattanooga Chapter.

She is survived by daughters, Pat (Jack) Herring, of Signal Mountain, and Susan (Michael) Ledbetter; and son, Tommy (Bonnie) Cope, of Chattanooga. She had seven grandchildren, Michele Herring, of Signal Mountain, Brian Cope, of Boston, Mass., Allan, Joey and Lee Cope, Todd and Chad Ledbetter of Chattanooga; and one great-grandchild, Kadee Cope; nephew, Jim (Deb) Sumner, of Kingston, Tenn., and niece, Charlotte (Terry) Page, of Flintstone, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Hospice of Chattanooga, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Brainerd Baptist School. The family would like to thank Dr. Terry Melvin and her staff at Hospice of Chattanooga and Pallative Care for their support and guidance through this difficult time.

Ronald Hatfield

Ronald E. Hatfield, 61, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009, at a local hospital.

He was of the Church of God faith. He was a member of the IUOE Union #917 and the American Legion. He was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Norma Hatfield.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Billie Hatfield; daughter, Vanessa Hatfield; brothers, Clifford Hatfield, Bill Hatfield; sister, Linda Grant. He was also loved dearly by his brothers and sisters-in-law.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Tate officiating.

Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

David Michael Hodge, 55, of Clearwater, Fla., passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Peggy Linder

Peggy Ervin Linder, 76, of Ooltewah, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, she has been a resident of Ooltewah for the past 30 years and was a member of Ooltewah Baptist Church. She graduated from Lakeview High School in 1950 and was retired from the Hamilton County Clerk's Office after 15 years of service.

She was the daughter of the late Claude "Johnny Flynn" and Ottie Ervin and was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Linder; and a brother, James Ervin.

Survivors include her sister, Mary Jo King, Milton, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Billie Ervin, Frostproof, Fla.; niece, caregiver and family, Patrice, Tim, Evan and Joseph; several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tony DeYoung officiating.

Paul Lynch

Paul Lynch, 61, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at his home.

He was a member of Grace Works Church and was retired from the state of Tennessee Southeast Community Service Agency as Executive Director. Mr. Lynch was a graduate of UT Knoxville and was a veteran serving in the Navy Seabees.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheri Lynch; father, John Andrew Lynch Sr.; and two nephews, Matt Lusk and Michael Lynch.

Survivors include his mother, Martha Elinor Lynch sister, Barbara Elinor Lusk; brother, John Andrew Lynch Jr.; one cousin, Edwin R. Rogers, of Knoxville; Aunt, Barbara Rose Spoonamore Rogers, of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

Ronald Naylor

Ronald Pope Naylor, 77, of Mowbray Mountain's Montlake community, left us on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.

A native of Montreal, he earned an MLS in Library Science from McGill University. His career in library administration took him to the Universities of Chicago, Houston, Maryland, and Miami, from which he retired as a Professor Emeritus in 1999.

In Chattanooga he volunteered for the Signal Mountain Library, the Montlake Homeowner's Association, Tennesseans for Fair Taxation, and the Tennessee Health Care Campaign. He worked part time at the Baylor School Library.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Sally Naylor; sons, Dwight Monteith, of Austin and Kenneth Naylor, of Miami Beach; grandson, Maximo Monteith; and sisters, Rachel Fletcher, Penelope Henderson, and Gillian Villeneuve.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the Baylor School Chapel.

Dr. Paul Nolan

Paul Vernon Nolan, M.D., 85, of Signal Mountain, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Alexian Village Health Care Center from liver failure.

He was the son of the late A.V. and Ellen Nolan; and was preceded in death by his daughter, Lou Anne Harrelson.

Born in Bladenboro, N.C., the Nolan family lived in several places in western North Carolina during his youth. He was a graduate of Mars Hill Junior College and also the two year medical program at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

Dr. Nolan earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy at Camp LeJeune, N.C., and then served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. While in the Air Force, he earned his Master's of Public Health degree at the University of California, Berkley. Later he served as a Preventive Medicine Officer in the Tactical Air Command at Langley Field, Va. He also practiced family medicine in King's Mountain, N.C. for several years.

The Nolan family moved to Signal Mountain in 1959 when Paul became Medical Director for E.I. DuPont of Chattanooga.

Dr. Nolan's life was focused on public education. Nolan Elementary School on Signal Mountain was named in his honor. He served 12 years on the Hamilton County Quarterly Court, one term in the Tennessee Legislature and 16 years on the Hamilton County Commission. He recently remarked that he had loved every phase of his life, that he treasured the many friends made along the way, and was thankful for the doctors and caregivers who attended to him.

Paul and Anne met while serving on the staff at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in North Carolina. They have been members of several baptist churches where they have lived. Dr. Nolan was named a Life Deacon at Signal Mountain Baptist Church, where he and Anne have been active for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Anne Lewis Nolan; two sons, Thomas Lewis Nolan, East Ridge, and John Andrew (Kathie) Nolan, P.A., Dunlap, Tenn.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Gold, Shelby, N.C.; and son-in-law, Steve Harrelson, Signal Mountain.

At his request, his body was to be an anatomical gift to the Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville.

Kimberly Elaine Preston, 51, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009, in a local hospital.

Kimberly was a member of Stuart Heights Baptist Church and the Cleveland Street Rod Association. She was a wonderful wife and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Gayle Elaine Case.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Preston; father, Harold Parrish; a son; granddaughter, Jayde Brown; sisters, Kaye Reece, Pat Saynes and Annie Perry; her beloved dogs, Billy and Bonnie; an aunt and uncle; three nephews; a niece, and several cousins.

Alma L. Sanders, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009, in a local hospital.

She retired from Erlanger hospital as a nurses' assistant and was a faithful member of Orchard Park Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Sanders Jr.; parents, Garfield and Mollie Yates; son, David E. Sanders; and daughter, Margaret L. Hinton.

Survivors: children, Saundra (Robert) Turney, Civi Ice, Norma (Victor) Mason, Patricia (Douglas) Johnson, Gilda (Sam) Petty, Donald (Yvonne) Sanders, Princess (Freddie) Brooks and Patricia Yon, all of Chattanooga; 13 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; brothers, James (Frankie) Yates, of Indianapolis, Ind., Thomas Yates, of Memphis and Freddie Yates, of Chattanooga; sisters, Shirley Gordon, of Chattanooga and Evelyn (Artie) Davis, of Atlanta; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives and friends.

Anastacia Sowders

Anastacia Sowders, 73, of Hixson, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009.

She was a member of Dividing Ridge Church of God, where she was part of the Ladies Ministries at the church. She loved her family dearly, also gardening and sewing. She was patriotic and was very proud to be a U.S. citizen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Sowders, and her parents.

She is survived by her daughters, Meri Sowders, Rowena Roño Anthony; brother, Segondito Roño; sisters, Conchita Drost, Lolita Stephani; grandchildren, Hunter Hawkins, Levi Adcock.

Graveside service will be noon Monday at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Minister Adam Aziz officiating.

Adena Varner

Mrs. Adena Ketchersid Varner, at age 96 years, went home to be with her Lord on June 24, 2009.

Adena Varner was born Feb. 2, 1913. A native of Soddy-Daisy, she had lived in Red Bank since the early 1940s. She attended Daisy High School and the University of Chattanooga, where she majored in elementary education and music.

Mrs. Varner taught in the Hamilton County school system for 38 years, working many years at Red Bank and Alpine Crest Elementary Schools. Mrs. Varner also served as home bound teacher to ill or disabled children unable to attend regular classes. Mrs. Varner was a beloved teacher who loved the children in her care, many of whom kept in contact with her well into their adult years.

Mrs. Varner was the widow of Warren C. Varner. Mr. and Mrs. Varner met in elementary school, became childhood sweethearts and were married for over 60 years. The Varners were long time members of Red Bank Baptist Church, where they served in various ministries. Mrs. Varner was an accomplished pianist and she continued playing her hymns and music until the very end of her life.

Mrs. Varner was preceded in death by her parents, E.B. Ketchersid and Flora Summers Ketchersid; as well as by her brother, Bennett Ketchersid; and a niece, Barbara Ketchersid Albert.

Survivors include her sister, Betty Edwards (Leo); nieces, Diane Tillison (Howard) and Donna Needham (Mitchell); great-nieces and nephews, Lauren and David Barker and Grant and Alex Needham; great-niece, Karen Chandler; great-nephew, Mitchell Albert; as well as Linda Farr (John) who was much like a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Varner. In her later years as her health declined, Mrs. Varner was able to remain in her home due to the faithful friendship and care of Frances Ledford, Lisa McCurry and Katherine "Kay" Roark. Mrs. Varner had many loving friends, including Jane Plumlee and extended family members who will miss her. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Wayne Scott and Hospice of Chattanooga for their assistance and compassionate care of Mrs. Varner.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel with Rev. Bert Jones and Charles DuPree officiating.

Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Rose Woods

Rose Redman Woods, 104, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Soddy-Daisy Health Care Center.

She was a resident of Sandusky, Ohio for most of her life before moving to the Chattanooga area nine years ago. She was a buyer for J.C. Penney Co. for 30 years and was an independent woman who supported her parents and her son, making her a woman ahead of her time. After her retirement she moved to North Olmsted, Ohio, where she worked at the senior center and was named "Volunteer of the Year" by the city of North Olmsted. She moved to Chattanooga in 2000 to be close to her son and lived at the Terrace for seven years.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, S. Eugene Woods; and her son, James E. Woods.

Survivors include daughter-in-law, Carol Woods; grandchildren, Leslie (Dave) Vaccaro, Wendy (Reid) Williamson and Jim (Adair) Woods. Rose's life is celebrated through her nine great-grandchildren, Alexandra Rose, Jordan Rose, Ruth Williamson, Carol Williamson, Elizabeth Woods, Reid Williamson, William Woods, Cassady Williamson and John Woods.

Rose's quick wit and tenacious spirit remained with her until the very end. Her family is grateful for the loving care Rose received from Soddy-Daisy Health Care Center and from Hospice of Chattanooga.

The body will sent to the David F. Koch Funeral Home in Sandusky, Ohio for services and burial.

Local arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road.

LYNCHBURG -- Peggy Bell Gattis, 63, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009.

Funeral service was held Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Thomas Quarles

JASPER -- Thomas Lee Quarles, 72, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2009, at Grandview Medical Center.

He was born October 16, 1936, to the late Walter and Gertie Quarles.

He worked for Joe Thomas Construction Company for many years and was a former member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Jasper.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Joe Quarles; and two brothers, Ray and James Quarles.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby P. Quarles; sons, Jimmy Lee Quarles, Arnold, Michael, Allen, and Terry Dixon; daughters, Lisa Freeman, Cynthia McDowell, Sandra Wallin, Carolyn Farr; brothers, Kay and Bobby Quarles; sisters, Connie Cabe, Betty Jean Campbell, Shirley Terry, Cathy Carson, and Judy Hardy; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. CDT on Monday, June 29, 2009, in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

The family will gather with friends today from noon-9 p.m. CDT at the funeral home.

SUMMERVILLE -- Gerthie L. Hampton, 72, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Funeral today at 1:30 p.m. at Ark of Faith Holiness Church.

Interment in Lyerly Cemetery.

LaFAYETTE -- Kathy Helton, 49, died Friday, June 26, 2009.

She is survived by daughter, Sarahann Helton; sons, Jason Alexander, Christopher Silvers; brothers, Michael Masucci, Ronald Masucci.
