5 champs from 2007 still alive

Going into tonight’s state quarterfinal round, all five TSSAA Division I football champions from last season are still alive.

Two-time defending Class 5A champion Smyrna is at Oakland, trying to avenge a seven-point loss from earlier this year. Unbeaten David Lipscomb, which won its first 3A title last year, hosts Giles County. In 1A, South Pittsburg puts its 27-game winning streak on the line at another traditional power, second-ranked Trousdale County.

Maryville (4A) and Alcoa (2A) are trying to become the only programs in state history to claim five consecutive state titles. Maryville’s Rebels, who have won 72 straight games, are at Rhea County tonight. Alcoa, whose only losses the last two years was to Maryville, hosts Loudon, a team it beat 37-0 three weeks ago.

Maryville also leads all Tennessee programs with 11 state championships, while Alcoa has nine.

Both of last year’s Division II champions have been eliminated. Three teams that finished runners-up last year — McKenzie in 1A, Goodpasture Christian in 2A and Brentwood Academy in Division II-AA — are still playing.

Brentwood Academy, another traditional power, is returning to a title game. When the Eagles play Memphis University School in the Division II-AA title game on Nov. 25, they will be trying for their 11th state title and first under former McCallie coach Ralph Potter.

Trousdale County owns six state titles. Marion County, Milan and South Pittsburg — all still playing tonight — each has four.

Smyrna’s Woods to play

Smyrna High officials have cleared senior lineman Dakota Woods to play in tonight’s quarterfinal game at Oakland, despite his recent arrest on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges. Woods, a star lineman for Smyrna, faces felony charges of possession of an explosive device and reckless endangerment as well as misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to an incident report, Smyrna police arrested Woods after responding to a complaint in which a 7-year-old child was pictured on a MySpace account holding two handguns. During a search, police found two handguns, three pill containers containing gunpowder and nails, two miniature bats with screws at the end and two daggers. A minor at the residence said Woods, 18, had bought the handguns.

A court date is set for Jan. 20.
